What This Sign is For: This sign is used to indicate the direction of egress travel during an emergency. It works as part of a photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) exit path system, guiding occupants toward the nearest exit when visibility is reduced or power is lost.

Legal Requirement Explained: Under NYC Building Code §1025 (Photoluminescent Exit Path Markings), certain buildings—particularly high-rise structures—must include a continuous, visible egress path. Directional arrow signs are required wherever the path of travel is not obvious, ensuring occupants can follow a clearly marked route to safety in dark or smoky conditions.

Who is Required to Post This Sign
- High-rise buildings (generally 75 feet or taller)
- Commercial office buildings
- Hotels and residential high-rises
- Buildings required to install photoluminescent egress systems under NYC code
- Any structure where exit direction is not immediately apparent

Where We Recommend This Sign Be Posted
- Along exit access corridors and egress pathways
- At points where direction changes occur (turns, intersections, or split paths)
- Inside stairwells and exit passageways
- Near floor-level path markings, forming a continuous guidance system
- At any location where occupants may be unsure of the correct exit direction

Unacceptable Locations to Post This Sign
- Areas where the direction of travel is already obvious and does not require guidance
- Locations where the sign is obstructed by doors, furniture, or equipment
- Spaces with insufficient ambient light to charge the photoluminescent material
- Inconsistent placements that break the continuity of the egress path
- Mounted too high or out of alignment with the rest of the egress marking system

Recommended Height / Installation Requirements
- Typically installed at low-level (approximately 12”–18” above finished floor)
- Must align with floor-level egress path markings
- Installed in a way that ensures continuous visibility along the path of travel
- Must be durable, permanently affixed, and unobstructed
- Requires sufficient exposure to ambient light to remain visible in darkness
